Part 1: Responsibilities of Driving, Condition of the Driver,

Chapter # 14 in the Drive Right Textbook

  • Welcome
  • Introductions of today’s topics & material that the students will be covering.
  • Explain the lesson agenda & what you will be covering in class. Explain what you will be covering in Part 1 & Part 2.
  • Take attendance.
  • Cover any of the unfinished chapter information from the previous day, chapter # 1… answer any questions regarding basic skills of driving or basic parts of the car, or responsibilities of the driver.

 

 

Required Activity:

  • Who Is the Responsible Driver?
  • Pass out the Activity, Who is the Responsible Driver? Have the students list as many attributes of a good driver & bad driver. Discuss the results & identify how you can spot out a good driver & a bad driver… see activity…
  • Crossword Puzzle - Chapter # 14, Effects of Driver Conditions on Risk Taking.
  • Pass out the Activity, Crossword Puzzle – Chapter # 14, Effects of Driver Conditions on Risk Taking.

Have students work on the activity, individually. Remind the students to do a good job on this "starter activity" Let them know that the activity will need to be turned in, later in the class. Remind the students that they will get similar "starter activities" when they arrive, each day in class. This comment will prepare the students to do a good job on the starter activities & it will let them know that you will be collecting the activities, as well.

 

Follow up Activity:

  • Have the students read & review chapter # 14, from the Drive Right Textbook.
    • Cover pages 292 - 308.
    • Go over questions & answers from Reviewing Chapter Objectives on page 309. Questions # 1 – 10
    • Discuss questions from the chapter test on page 310, # 1 – 16.
    • Review the Decision Making Questions on Page 311, # 1 – 4.

  • Feel Free to show any of the videos, that you did not already show   from Class # 3 or 4 ...

  • Road Rage, Havoc on the Highway,    19 minutes

Part 2: Smith System, Day # 2,

Using Your Eyes Effectively,

Keep Your Eyes Moving

 

 

  • Read / Discuss & Review all Five Keys and all of the components.
  • Remind the students that they will have to memorize all five keys & all of the components. This set of notes will be helpful in order to pass the smith system quiz on day # 7.
  • Some good, easy, simple Mnemonic memory devices

that are helpful to remember the smith system:

  • All Five Keys are in alphabetical order - AGKLM
  • All Good Kids Like Milk
  • All Good Kids Like Movies
  • All Good Kids Love Mom
  • Activity: Aim High In Steering - H. E. L. T.

Pass out the Habitual Eye Lead Time Activity.

Have the students decide if the driver in each car is looking 12 – 15 seconds, ahead of their vehicle. If the driver is looking correctly, then have the students check off " CORRECT". If the driver is looking incorrectly, then have the students check off "INCORRECT" and then have the students draw a new line with an arrow tip to show the new route that the driver should be looking.

Go over questions # 1 – 15 & discuss the answers, when the students are finished!! Demonstrate the first 2 or three questions & answers with the students.

 

  • Show Video: SMITH SYSTEM, VIDEO # 2

Using Your Eyes Effectively 9 minutes

After the video, pass out the Smith System activity, Some Symptoms of Poor Driving Habits.

 

Activity: Smith System, Some Symptoms of Poor Driving Habits

  • Go over questions & answers with students.
  • Remind the students that there will be questions on the quiz and on the mid-term test that will be very similar to questions from this activity…

Answers on the quiz and on the mid-term test will need to be written down with a smith system answer. The answers must include keys from the smith system.
