Urban Driving, Chapter # 10

Part 1: Mid-Term Test

  • Welcome
  • Introductions of today’s topics & material that the students will be covering.
  • Explain the lesson agenda & what you will be covering in class. Explain what you will be covering in Part 1 & Part 2.
  • Take attendance.
  • Cover any of the unfinished chapter information from the previous days, chapters # 1, 14 & 5… answer any questions regarding basic skills of driving or basic parts of the car, or responsibilities & conditions of the driver or forces of impact.

Required Activity:

  • Pass out the Mid-Term Test

Tips for the test: You may want to consider giving the students a few minutes to review their notes, when they come in to the classroom on this test day. Give the students a good amount of time to take the test in class. Everyone should take the test, unless they missed the last two days of class or more. If a student was absent the day before the mid-term test, they are still required to take the test.

Students should mark an X on their answer sheet. Students should not write on the test booklets. On all of the activities, materials, forms & tests, students should write their first and last name. They should also write their class number & date on all of the items they turn into the classroom instructor.

Remind the students: If the students do not receive a passing score of 70 percent on the mid-term test, they can re-take the test on the next class day.

Special Situations: If a student is in a special education program or if he / she needs more time or more resources to take the mid-term test, you can arrange to let them take the test home ahead of the mid-term testing day. This will allow the students more time to study & cover the material. They may also have assistance from their parents, teachers or aides at their school. The student can review the material and then take the test with the rest of the students in class.

Take home test: If a student does not pass the test with a score of 70 percent, they can re-take the test. If the instructor, parent or student feels that there will be additional resources needed in order for the student to successfully pass the exam, the instructor may elect to let the student re-take the test at home or at their school. They may also use their parents, teachers, aides as a guide when taking the test. Students are only allowed assistance; No one is allowed to take the test for the student.

After each student finishes their mid-term test, you can arrange three piles for the student. Direct the students to place their booklets in one pile, their answer sheets in another pile. You can set up a third pile for the students and include the follow up activity for chapter # 10, Driving in Rural Areas, – Hidden Word Puzzle. Have the students take a follow up activity to complete, once they are finished with the final exam. Have the students take the follow up activity during the first part of class, not during the second part of class. The follow up activity will allow everyone to be working quietly during the test taking time. By the time everyone is working on the follow-up activity, it will be time for a break period !

When students are finished, you may grade the test right away or during the second part of class. Feel free to re-distribute the tests back to the students. Let the students grade the exams for you ! If any student complains, that they do not want another student grading their test, remind them that the tests will be double-checked & double graded for accuracy. After you pass out the exams to be graded, have the students sign their names at the bottom. Tell them that they can include a phrase:

This test was graded by ________________.

Or this test was checked over and evaluated by ____________________.       Remind the students:   Don’t forget to sign your name !!
