Classroom Instructor Tips:

  • Instructors need to show up at least 15 minutes early for each classroom session. This will allow time to let the early students get into the classroom. It will also allow time for you to review your materials & lesson plan for the class session.
  • Be prepared, stay calm & stay organized. That way you can have a smooth and enjoyable class.
  • Be nice & polite to the parents & students. You will receive many questions & comments from the students & parents. Let everyone know the correct information, policies or procedures. If you do not know the answer to any certain question, contact the office or have the student or parent contact the office, so we can help out the situation.
  • Take your time when you write out receipts of payment. Record the information thoroughly and accurately. Use the database information to record balances on the receipts. If any student or parent has a question regarding discounts, or their balance, tell them to contact the main office.
  • Take attendance daily.

SEE ATTENDANCE TIPS, FOR COMPLETING THE ATTENDANCE FORM, CORRECTLY.

  • Make sure your attendance records are neat, complete and accurate. All attendance forms need to be turned in with the class file, at the end of the course. The records will remain on file at our main office, for the Secretary of State Officials, to review. Always include the class date and chapter numbers on the top of each lesson. Make sure that you mark the student ABSENT or PRESENT. Use an A to mark a student ABSENT. Use a CHECK MARK to record a student PRESENT. Once again, make sure your records are neat, complete and accurate.
  • If a student comes to a make up class, find the date of the class that the student missed on the attendance form. Record the make up class date under the A (ABSENT DATE).
  • Any changes in a students name, preferred name, middle name, last name, address, phone number or birth date should be given to the main office at once. Any special pick up information or additional address information should also be given to the office ASAP. Especially if the student has two locations or lives at two addresses with multiple parents or guardians. Since this information needs to be added to our computer database, it should be phoned in, faxed or sent to the main office, right away!
  • Call the office immediately and submit the student information if you do not see a student’s name or all of the students complete information listed on the attendance form or class roster
  • Discuss the course syllabus and everything that will be covered in the program.
  • Discuss all of the requirements necessary for the students to obtain their driving permit & driver’s license.
  • Discuss all of the course requirements of the driver’s education program necessary to receive a letter of completion from the secretary of state. Also, repeat these comments all throughout the course to remind the students of the process.
  • Discuss the process of receiving the update letter of completion from our program & the official letter of completion from the secretary of state. Also, repeat these comments all throughout the course to remind the students of the process.
  • Cover the CLASSROOM GRADING CHECKLIST with the students. Let the students know the breakdown of the grading percentages and requirements. Discuss the Quiz, Mid-Term test, Final Exam, the activities, class work and homework policies. Explain the breakdown and value of each assessment, activity, class assignments and homework. Remind the student that they will have to turn in all necessary assignments and it is a requirement to receive a passing score of 70 PECRCENT, on the quiz, mid-term test & the final exam. If a student does not receive a passing score of 70 PERCENT, then they can retake the test or quiz as many times as necessary. Contact the office if you need any additional information regarding students with special needs, or if you have a student with learning disabilities. All students can be incorporated into our program successfully, to receive a successful outcome !
  • Keep everything SIMPLE. Keep your comments, directions, instructions, materials, activities, and lessons simple. This will allow everything to go much more smoothly.
  • Conduct a happy & positive classroom atmosphere. Keep a happy working environment. Use soft tones & voices in the classroom. Be clear and direct. Instructors are advised not to yell or raise their voices at the students. Don’t use bad language or call the students names. Stay organized and be patient. BTW instructors are also given this same advice.
  • Explain and clarify your personal goals, expectations, recommendations & requirements for the students.
  • Explain and clarify all of the course goals of the driver’s education program. Also explain and clarify all of the course expectations, recommendations & requirements for the students.
  • During the first day of class, you are required to review the rules of the road & the rules of our driver’s education program. Talk to the students. Talk to the students daily & inform them about all of the daily events, activities, course requirements & information. Please spend a good amount of time on all of the items that are passed out to the students. Make sure to thoroughly review all of our policies & procedures of the driver’s education program:
  • Report Card Requirements. Students must turn in a blue form, yellow form, pink form, GED Letter, or the last two semesters of report cards. Review the requirements of completion.
  • Explain to the students that our driver’s education program will require all of the permit information necessary to file for a certificate of completion.
  • Tell the students to be prepared to fill out yellow cards, to submit their permit information to the Illinois’ Office of the Secretary of State.
  • Review & complete the Yellow card process with the class, once the students have received their permits.

SEE YELLOW CARD INSTRUCTIONS, in the lesson plan binder, under Lesson # 10.

  • Explain Attendance & make up classes. Also explain the make up class schedule of dates and times available for any student who misses a class. Inform the students that any student who misses more than FOUR classes will be dropped from the course & will need to re-enroll.
  • Explain the payment procedures.
  • Have the students write down all necessary phone numbers for our program. Have the students write down our office phone number, the classroom phone number and the emergency numbers that students can use in order to contact their driving instructor in case of an emergency situation. Include the local phone number of our driving school office and the phone number to the instructor’s cell phone number.
  • Explain the proper procedure to schedule driving lessons.
  • Remind the students to keep a block of at least 3 hours for each of their four driving lessons.
  • Explain the time frame that will be involved for each lesson. Each lesson is approximately 3 hours long. Students will drive for an HOUR AND A HALF and they will also observe for an HOUR AND A HALF. Sometimes it is a little longer, sometimes it is a little shorter. It depends on the other students schedules during the lesson & the location of other observers.
  • If any student has any requests, submit the information directly to the office or to the instructor, RIGHT AWAY. ALSO, remind the student to tell the instructor when they get into the vehicle for the lesson about any special, important information. Remind the students to tell the instructors if they have to be dropped off at a specific time, location, work, school, or at another parents’ or guardian’s house… Tell the students to limit their requests and to be flexible with the instructor’s schedules and the other schedules of the other students in the car.
  • Explain what the students need to bring on each lesson: Driving Permit, warm clothes, extra money if they want to get drinks or snacks…
  • Explain the skills that will be covered on each lesson.
  • Explain the required driver’s license test skills that will be covered in the classroom & in the car: The Uphill & Down Hill Parking Skills, The Three-Point Turn, Parking & Backing …
  • Explain the expectations of the students in the car, during the BTW Lessons.
  • Explain the no show policy and explain the no show forms that need to be completed if any student cancels or misses a driving lesson.
  • Explain the no show fees that will be applied if a student cancels within 24 hours.
  • Explain the behavior & classroom rules. Tell the students what should be expected of their behavior in the classroom & during their BTW Sessions. Remind the students not to leave wrappers, crumbs, garbage… in the classroom or driver’s education cars. Students who cannot keep the classroom or cars clean will not be allowed to bring snacks, drinks, or materials with them in the class or cars.
  • Explain to the students that disorderly conduct is also not allowed in or around the buildings of the classroom. Respect our neighbors. Remind the students to be quiet and polite to anyone near or around the building of the classroom. No smoking, loitering, littering, loud noise, running, or inappropriate behavior will be allowed in or around the building. Northwest Suburban Driving School will enforce these rules.
  • Instructors need to make sure that the classrooms are clean, neat and orderly. Have the classroom students help push in chairs, and also have the students pick up papers, small items or garbage from the tables & floors. Organize the classroom so the room will be neat and orderly and ready for the next class session ! After each class session, make sure the floors are cleaned, tables are organized and lined up and chairs are pushed in and lined up nicely next to the tables.
  • Keep your materials & files neat and organized. Do not leave tests, quizzes, activities, answer keys or class materials laying around the classroom. Do not develop piles of materials in the classroom. Return any used or unused files to the file cabinet when finished with the material.

Contact the office if you would like additional bins or file holders to store your excess materials.

  • Please contact the office immediately if you have a student who is causing problems or being disruptive in the classroom. Students are not allowed to hinder the learning process of a class or any other student. Give the students options on what they can do to improve their classroom performance. Remember it is your classroom, not theirs !
  • After completion of the whole driver’s education course session, have all of the students materials ready for the main office to process. This information includes the official attendance form and all of the students’ quizzes, tests, waiver forms, report cards, eligibility forms and yellow cards.
